SPECIAL ABILITIES

Light Flash (Ex)

Once per day, as a standard action, a fire beetle can create a brilliant flash of light. All creatures in a 10-foot radius spread must succeed on a DC 8 Fortitude save or be dazzled for 1 minute. The fire beetle’s glow then goes out for 1 hour.

Luminescence (Ex)

A fire beetle’s glowing glands provide light in a 10-foot radius. A dead fire beetle’s luminescent glands continue to glow for 1d6 days after its death.

ECOLOGY

Environment any
Organization solitary, cluster (2-6), or colony (7-12)

Beetles are a type of vermin that compose a huge number of different insect species. There are more types of beetles than any other life form in the known worlds, consisting of 25% of all known forms of life.

Beetles can be found in all climates except for aquatic and polar regions. They feed on plants and fungi, breaking down animal and plant debris, as well as consuming other insects. Some beetles are known to prey upon small birds and animals.

All beetles are known for having a three-segmented body ending with an abdomen that contains a set of gossamer wings protected by an armored sheath. A number of species, particularly cave-dwelling, have been found to not possess wings.

Like many other insects, beetles can be found in massive sizes.

These luminous nocturnal insects are prized by miners and adventurers. They have two glands, one above each eye, that produce a red glow. The glands’ luminosity persists for several days after removal from the beetle.

Fire beetles are about 2 feet long.
