The oni are a race of supernatural spirit beings that assume the form of a specific race of humanoid creatures. Some become goblinoids; taking the form of goblins, hobgoblins, and the like. Others become giants, like ogres or fire giants. When assuming their physical forms, these creature often have features that set them apart from the species from whom they are imitating, such extra or missing fingers, large horns, a third eye, or skin colors that range outside the standard for the humanoid species.

Unlike the humanoids they imitate, oni are possessed of a wicked intelligence and vast supernatural powers.

This include the ability to change their physical forms and cast a variety of spell-like abilities.

Despite their intelligence, oni are known to be brutish and wicked. They delight in the suffering of others. They often steal what they want from surrounding communities, be it property or persons (young humanoids are their favorite creature to enslave). Given their intelligence and their magical powers, oni prefer to dress as nobility, wearing fine clothing and armor.
