The “hell hound” is an extraplanar creature that resembles a mortal canine. However, this is where the resemblance of hell hounds stops. These creatures are entirely evil, possessed of a cunning intelligence that drives them to stalk and hunt mortals for pleasure.

Hell hounds are the dogs of Hell. They appear to be canines with emaciated features and fire spouting from their eyes and mouths. The average hell hound stands 4 feet at the shoulder and weighs about 120 pounds (12 bulk).

Hell hounds use wolf-like tactics. They organize in packs, surrounding their prey, and attack one at a time until the target tires or fall to the ground. If singular attacks do not seem to be effective, the pack will each breathe a gout of flame at the target. The pack then charges in all at once to slay their prey with fiery bites.

While hell hounds are found in the Plane of Hell, they are also regularly seen in the Plane of Fire and the volcanic worlds on the Material Plane. Fire giants and other fiery creatures make use of hell hounds as guard dogs and hunting beasts.
