SPECIAL ABILITIES

Breath Weapon (Su)

As a swift action once every 1d4+1 rounds, an iron golem can exhale a 20-foot cube of poisonous gas. This gas cloud persists for 1 round; any creature within the area when the golem creates it (as well as any creature that passes through the cloud during the remainder of that round) is exposed to the cloud’s poisonous effects. This poison is magically created each time the golem uses this power.

Immunity to Magic (Ex)

An iron golem is immune to spells or spell-like abilities that allow spell resistance.

Certain spells and effects function differently against it, as noted below.

  • A magical attack that deals electricity damage slows an iron golem (as the slow spell) for 3 rounds, with no saving throw.
  • A magical attack that deals fire damage breaks any slow effect on the golem and heals 1 point of damage for each 3 points of damage the attack would otherwise deal. If the amount of healing would cause the golem to exceed its full normal hit points, it gains any excess as temporary hit points. An iron golem gets no saving throw against fire effects.
  • An iron golem is affected normally by rust attacks, such as those of a rust monster or an entropic grasp spell.

Golems are magical constructs that are created to act as guardians and servants. They are constructed using a base material and then given life by using magical rituals to entrap an elemental spirit within the body. The creation of a golem is often a long and expensive task.

Golems are mindless and rely on the orders of their master. They follow the orders that are given to them in the simplest and most uncomplicated manner. They are incapable of complex strategy or tactics.

There are many different types of golems; each of which possess different powers based on its type. The golems described here are the most common types encountered in a fantasy world.

Whereas most other golems are created as guards, iron golems are usually created as mindless soldiers of war. These behemoths are unstoppable engines of destruction. They wade into melee with powerful blows from their fists and expel a corrosive poisonous gas onto the battlefield.

The most basic iron golem appears to be massive suit of heavy plated armor in a general humanoid form.

Some golem crafters take special delight in their work and will fashion a mold for their iron golem before pouring in the magically treated molten iron. The average iron golem is about 12 feet tall and weighs 5,000 pounds (500 bulk).
